Estimates of the market, not a recommendation or a quote. Typical usage is a benchmark for a home of that size in the Energex area with no solar (about 5,500 kWh a year for 3 people, our own working figure until the regulator's published benchmark is loaded), priced by the same engine as the paid check on the Australian Energy Regulator’s plan data. Your own usage, your tariff and any solar change the answer, and a home with solar panels usually imports much less than this.

The same table is behind the Free Quick Scan, which reads it for your postcode and household size, and behind the paid check, which replaces typical usage with your own bill.

By region

The same plans everywhere. Different homes.

A plan does not care which side of the river you are on. What changes from region to region is the housing, the climate and the meters, and with them the plan that comes out cheapest.

Brisbane

Brisbane City Council covers the capital from the CBD out to the bayside, the western suburbs along the river and the northern and southern suburbs in between. It is the largest council area in Australia by population and the centre of the Energex network.

167 suburbs

Gold Coast

The City of Gold Coast runs from the Coomera growth corridor in the north to Coolangatta on the New South Wales border, and from the beaches back to the hinterland at Tamborine and Springbrook. It is Queensland's second-largest city and its housing is a mix of high-rise, canal estates, new estates and acreage.

55 suburbs

Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast takes in Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore and Coolum along the beaches, Nambour and the Blackall Range behind them, and the Noosa Shire to the north. It is one of the fastest-growing parts of South East Queensland and is served by Energex throughout.

61 suburbs

Ipswich

Ipswich is South East Queensland's oldest provincial city and now one of its fastest-growing, with the Springfield, Ripley and Redbank Plains corridors adding new estates every year alongside the heritage suburbs around the city centre.

37 suburbs

Logan

Logan sits between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, from Springwood and Underwood in the north through Beenleigh to the new communities at Yarrabilba and Flagstone in the south. It is one of the most diverse cities in Australia and its housing is mostly detached homes on ordinary suburban blocks.

43 suburbs

Moreton Bay

The City of Moreton Bay runs from the northern edge of Brisbane at Albany Creek and Strathpine through the Redcliffe Peninsula, North Lakes and Caboolture to Bribie Island and the Samford and Dayboro valleys. It is one of the largest councils in Australia by population.

49 suburbs

Redland

Redland City is Brisbane's bayside neighbour: Capalaba and Cleveland on the mainland, Victoria Point and Redland Bay to the south, and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and North Stradbroke Island offshore. Detached homes on larger blocks are the norm, with a strong retiree community.

18 suburbs

Scenic Rim

The Scenic Rim is the rural south-west of the region: Beaudesert, Boonah and Kalbar on the plains, Tamborine Mountain and Canungra on the ranges. It is farmland, small towns and acreage, and it is still inside the Energex network, so its households choose a retailer like Brisbane's do.

10 suburbs

Somerset

The Somerset region sits north-west of Ipswich around the Wivenhoe and Somerset dams: Fernvale and Lowood on the Brisbane Valley, Esk and Toogoolawah further up, and Kilcoy to the north. It is the rural edge of the Energex network.

Brisbane

Quick answers.

Which parts of Queensland can choose their electricity retailer?

Only South East Queensland: the area Energex serves, which takes in Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Redland, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, the Scenic Rim and the Somerset region. Everywhere else in Queensland is served by Ergon Energy, whose retail prices are set by the regulator, so there are no competing plans to compare there.

How many electricity plans are there in South East Queensland?

917 generally available residential plans from 26 retailers were open to a home of 3 people anywhere in the Energex area on 30 September 2026, according to the Australian Energy Regulator's plan data. Plans restricted to particular customers, and plans that need a meter a home does not have, sit outside that count.

What does electricity cost in South East Queensland?

On typical usage for a home of 3 people, the generally available plans cost between about $1,790 and $7,680 a year at their current rates with no conditional discounts counted, and a middle-of-the-road plan costs about $450 a year more than the best one. The table on this page gives the same figures for every household size. Your own usage, your meter, your solar and your hot water move you up or down that range, which is what a check on your bill works out.

Are electricity prices the same across South East Queensland?

The plans are. Every generally available plan is sold at the same rates across the whole Energex network, because the network charges inside those rates are the same from Noosa to Coolangatta. What differs from suburb to suburb is the housing, the climate and the meters, and with them how much a home uses and when, so the plan that comes out cheapest differs even though the price list does not.
