Who gets the Queensland Electricity Rebate, and how is it applied?

Published 19 September 2026 · 3 minute read · by My Energy Agent

In short

Holders of a Queensland Seniors Card, a Pensioner Concession Card, a Health Care Card or a Veteran Gold Card, and some asylum seekers, who hold the electricity account at their principal place of residence. You apply once through your retailer, by phone or a form, and the rebate is then taken off each bill automatically. It stays with you when you switch retailer, but you have to tell the new one.

Who is eligible

The Queensland Government's Electricity and gas rebates page lists the cards: the Queensland Seniors Card, the Pensioner Concession Card, the Health Care Card and the Veteran Gold Card, plus asylum seekers who can show an ImmiCard. You must be the account holder, and the supply address must be your principal place of residence. The page states the current amount, which the government sets each year: as at 19 September 2026 it shows $399.47 a year, GST inclusive.

How to apply

  1. Contact your electricity retailer, by phone or by asking for the application form.
  2. Give them the card details. The retailer checks eligibility with the government.
  3. Check the next bill. The rebate appears as a line, proportioned to the days in the billing period, and is deducted automatically from then on.

When you switch retailer

The rebate does not follow you on its own. Tell the new retailer you receive it when you sign up, or apply again with them, and check the first bill. A retailer that does not know about the card cannot apply the rebate, and a missed rebate is one of the more common reasons a bill is higher than it should be.

Does a concession change which plan is cheapest?

No. The rebate is a fixed amount off the bill whichever plan you are on, so it does not change the ranking, and a plan marketed to seniors or concession holders should be compared on its rates like any other; some are good and some are ordinary. What a card can change is eligibility: a few plans are open only to card holders, and our check asks about the card only when a plan's own conditions require it.

Quick answers

How much is the Queensland Electricity Rebate?

The amount is set by the Queensland Government each year and stated on its Electricity and gas rebates page; as at 19 September 2026 the page shows $399.47 a year, GST inclusive, applied to each bill in proportion to the days it covers. Check the page for the current figure.

Do I keep the electricity rebate if I switch retailer?

You remain eligible, but the new retailer has to be told: apply again with them when you sign up, and check that it appears on the first bill. The rebate is applied by the retailer, so a retailer that does not know about your card cannot deduct it.
